B - reporting

Up early, as usual...to see yaks in the valley as we had breakfast. Lovely, hairy creatures, making low grunting noises as they grazed their way across the valley.

After checking our tires, we drove on. After about 10 km we came to a canyon. So many animals had grazed that the short green grass under the pine trees seemed fake. All the guide books write about 'the undisturbed wilderness' of MOngolia that one gets the impression that the country is untouched by man, but there are sooooooo many herds of yaks, cows, goats, sheep, horses and camels that every single square kilometer we have seen has been grazed. This leads to very beautiful countryside, but is definitely affected by man. I think I had a mistaken impression that Mongolia would be literally a wilderness...I should really do more research.

It is still one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. The green is so very verdant...and tiny wild flowers under huge, huge skies.

We headed towards White Lake, buying petrol and fake spam at a small town just before the lake. My new rule is: do not buy tinned meat unless you can identify the animal. Some tins have pics of smiling horses on them...I did not buy them. At this point, if I find actual, real Spam I will be so excited I'll be looking for fine wines to pair with it.

We found the national park entrance, and drove around confusedly looking for a campsite round White Lake. The leaflet said, find a ranger, so we looked and looked until the kind woman from the shop by the lake told us where to camp. We gratefully purchased beer and mystery meat from her, and set up camp.

We walked round the lakeshore, which is v pretty, then climbed a hill with magnificent views. Then retired to Swiss for lunch, then decided to see 'Yellow Dog Cave' from our park leaflet - apparently an ice cave with a myth about a girl unable to meet her lover until a dog was trapped in hell...I felt v sorry for the dog. We followed the sign to a huge rock, but could find no cave, or dog. Walked back to the campsite, very windy but sunny and sooooo pretty.

Fake spam was delicious when fried!

Sounds Like a B movie
